Author Synithia Williams Chats About Worth the Wait, Writing and Her Celeb Crush

Today I have the pleasure of talking with romance author Synithia Williams. I met Synithia on Twitter awhile ago and I’ve been following her budding writing career ever since. She has two romance books under her belt, You Can’t Plan Love and her most recent release Worth the Wait.

Me: Hi, Synithia! Thanks so much for joining us today. Please tell us a little about yourself and when you first knew that you wanted to become a writer?

Synithia: Hey, Mel! Thanks for asking me to visit. Hope you don’t mind I brought lattes. I love dishing over coffee 🙂

Anywho, I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I wrote my first book when I was six and hand wrote my first 300 page novel in high school. It’s something I’ve always done, but really considered a hobby. I didn’t pursue my writing dreams until 2010 when I saw a friend go after her dream. I still can’t believe that my books were published so quickly.

When I’m not writing, I work full time on sustainability issues in the Midlands of South Carolina. I’m married with two boys (who are a handful but loveable). When I’m not writing, working, wife and mothering I’m usually in front of the television watching British miniseries on Netflix.

Me: You write “spicy romance set in the South”. Who are some of your favorite authors and did they play a part in your writing?

Synithia: I’ve got so many favorite authors. I really should pick one, but I’m too wishy washy to do that. I like the worlds created by paranormal authors J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books and J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. My favorite historical authors are Beverly Jenkins, Laura Lee Guhrkie and Lisa Kleypas. And I adore contemporary romances by Delaney Diamond, Adrienne Byrd and Maureen Smith.

All of these writers play a part in my writing. Whenever they write something that evokes some type of response in me it urges me to try and achieve the same thing in my writing.

Me: I absolutely loved your first book, You Can’t Plan Love and the heat between Kenyatta and Malcolm. I think I fanned myself

through most of the book. LOL! I can’t wait to sink my teeth into your latest release, Worth the Wait, which is next in my reading queue. Can you tell us a bit about it?

Synithia: Thanks so much! I really had fun writing these stories and hope everyone enjoys them. You see Malcolm and Kenyatta in Worth the Wait, but this story revolves round his brother Jared’s love life. Here’s the blurb and there are several excerpts on my blog:

After Tasha Smith is dumped yet again because of her virginity, decides it’s time to stop saving herself for marriage and start dating like women in the twenty-first century. She sets out to find a man rumored to be good enough in bed to relieve her of the nuisance, but discreet enough to keep her request a secret. Jared Patterson seems like the perfect candidate. Yet after one searing kiss, she wonders if she’ll escape the night unscathed.

Jared’s job as a successful fitness instructor and entrepreneur has helped him keep a string of meaningless relationships from the east to the west coast. After learning the hard way that women can’t be trusted, he has no qualms going from one sex only relationship to the next. Although Tasha is one of the few types of women he avoids—a good girl—the man in him can’t turn down her tempting offer.

What starts out as a onetime thing quickly turns into an affair neither want to stop. But when an unexpected situation drastically alters their relationship, it leaves them both asking if it was Worth the Wait.

Me:  I’ll definitely need your book to heat things up after I finish the murder mystery I’m currently reading. *chuckles*

Based on your own writing journey, what advice can you give those who are striving to become published?

Synithia: I set a goal to finish my first book. So number one: complete the book. Then I spent all of 2011 learning as much as I could about writing. I read books on writing and publishing, took webinars that offered critiques, entered contests and analyzed the feedback I was given then made the decision to pursue e-publishing. I’d recommend other writers do the same. Seek feedback and research the various routes to getting published.  Decide what’s best for you, and continue to write! I wrote Worth the Wait before I had a contract for You Can’t Plan Love. You want to have another book ready to go after your first one comes out.

Finally, keep learning! I’m going to writing conferences and still taking online classes to continue to improve my writing and learn about publishing.

Me: As writers, we never stop growing and learning.

Ok, one last thing before we let you get back to writing. Who is your celebrity crush and have you ever used them as inspiration for a character?

Idris Elba

Synithia: Oh. My. God. I LOVE Idris Elba! Hubby knows this already and I have inappropriate fantasies about spending weekends in his flat. But, alas, I haven’t modeled a hero after him. When I do, I’d like to have the story set in England and I need to visit the country first. And if I happen to bump into Mr. Elba it will only be a bonus!

Me: Idris just happens to be one of my celeb crushes too! That British accent and those smoldering eyes do me in every time!
