It’s Like Butta, Baby…Butterscotch, That Is

Geez, is it that hard to believe that I finally took the plunge? I pushed myself through fifteen years of prodding and teasing by my then boyfriend, now husband. He said I was scared and a chicken.  He said that I should have done it when he did, but I skipped out on the idea at the last minute. Sort of.

Are you wondering what the heck I’m talking about? Sure you are or else you wouldn’t still be reading this blog post waiting for me to get to the point.

Well, if you must know, I finally allowed someone to prick my virgin skin with their tattoo needles. Yes, I’ll admit I had held off because it looked painful as hell when my husband got his done fifteen years ago. I watched him go through the whole process and that was enough for me to say N-O! I don’t know why I finally decided to do it. It could have been hubby’s constant pestering or it could have been the fascination I got when I saw others with them. That part is not clear.

So the last few months I pondered over what kind of design I wanted to get. After all, this thing would be with me for the rest of my life. I just didn’t want to get any old thing. Did I want a butterfly, which I happen to love and would be colorful and beautiful? Or did I want the zodiac sign of Leo, for which I happened to be? It was very perplexing on what to get. Hey, I didn’t want to be an eighty-year-old woman years from now walking around with a skull and cross bones tattooed on my wrinkled arm, back, or worse—my ass. How would that look? Ok, I know that you can’t wipe that image from your brain now…sorry.

Then it came to me. I decided on getting the pet name my husband calls me tattooed on my back. I also wanted to incorporate pieces of candy to adorn the said name. I went to the tattoo parlor (do they even call them that anymore?) and talked to Tony to give him a rundown on what I wanted. I made my appointment and put down a deposit.

Duh, duh, duh, duhhhhh! The day finally came! I was so anxious and nervous. My hubby was more concerned with me not going through with it. Ye have little faith.

When I arrived, Tony informed me that he was going to freehand the design onto my arm with several sharpies, and then he would tat me. (Oh, I forget to tell you guys that I changed my mind from my back to the arm.)

While listening to heavy metal (no, I’m not a fan) Tony let his needles go to work. The initial shock of the pain took me to another dimension; I’m not going to lie. There was an instant that I thought I wasn’t going to continue and prove hubby right, but after a few minutes, I was able somehow to manage it. I even watched the needles as they entered my skin. All this while Tony cranked out his crazy sense of humor. He knew it was my first time (for a tattoo, people!) and he wanted to keep my mind away from the agony. Thanks, Tony!

Two hours later, he was finished with his masterpiece. I checked it out in the mirror and was so excited to see the end result! It had turned out better than what I had imagined!  Letting Tony use his creativity with the design helped a lot!

So, I survived and I’m alive and well to tell about it…for now!  It has only been two weeks. LOL! I’m so glad I went with something personal and unique to me. Believe it or not, I’m thinking about my next one….yesss, there will be a next time!

Now, let me know what you think of my new baby!

  1. Well written post, and awesome title.

I’m not a fan of tattoos ~ too permanent when life to me should be fluid and every changing.
That said, your tattoo looks better than most I’ve seen. : )

    • I think that is the reason that I waited so long to get one. I knew whatever I got would be there FOREVER. Also, I have seen some crappy tattoos too and I wanted to make sure the one I got looked decent. I didn’t want people to have to “figure out” what it said and what it was.

      Thanks for you comment!

  2. Wow, you watched? I’m too scared to get one because I’m such a wimp when it comes to pain.

    • Yes, it was kind of fascinating to see the little tiny needles moving effortless. Somehow that fascination and awe overshadowed the pain I was experiencing.

      Thanks for visiting my blog!

  3. It is rather amazing what tattoo artists can do while working on skin!
I wonder what happens if someone flinches??? . . . *Oops*

Your design is awesome and I expect that you will treasure it for ever.

    • You know what’s funny? I had made the appt for the tattoo and right after I caught a terrible cold. It was one of those colds where I went into horrific coughing attacks that literally choked me into tears. I waited until the day of the appt, thinking it would go away (of course not!) and called Tony to reschedule. I was afraid of what you mentioned…OOPS!!!

I LOVE the tattoo Melissa… I like your wring even more tho!!! You have a gift… please continue writing and entertaining me!!!!

  5. I wished mines were gone, if your not a die hard tatoo lover when you get one the image and appeal of it will certainly fade. The tat itself is unique, simple, but appealing. It will itch like crazy so keep it moisturized as well as use neosporin ointment. Good luck with it and the next one

    great blog by the way

    • Thanks for commenting. Yes, it does itch like crazy!

Hey, michelle, I’m not a huge fan of tatoo’s either, but that one is cute. Although, you took the nick name that I gave Maxwell. I wrote poem about him entitled,”My Butterscotch Fantasy”. It was soo hot. LOL. Anyway, back to you. I don’t like tats for me, but life is too short. You and your husband enjoy. Talk to u later Muszelover.
